Sam Flynn har aldrig tilgivet sin far, software-geniet Kevin Flynn, for at fordufte sporløst i 1989. Men da Sam modtager et signal fra Flynns nedlagte spilarkade, suges han igennem en portal og ind i den virtuelle Gitter-verden. Her må han overvinde det magtsyge program Clu, farmands digitale klon, som nu ønsker at skabe kaos uden for computerens univers. Men dét er ikke den største overraskelse, der venter Sam derinde.
