Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old engineering student at MacArthur High School in Irving, TX, couldn’t have possibly anticipated that his homework would land him in handcuffs, but that’s precisely how his Monday morning unfolded.
Ahmed had constructed an alarm clock in his spare time — an impressive hobby for your average teen — and had brought the clock to school to show his engineering teacher. It was shortly thereafter that he found himself in handcuffs; having done no wrong, school officials had accused him of bringing a fake bomb to school.
The event sparked national uproar as critics alleged that the event was a result of anti-Muslim sentiment. A press conference held Wednesday morning clarified that all charges against the teen had been dropped amid Ahmed’s public support from Hillary Rodham Clinton, Mark Zuckerberg, and President Obama.
In fact, Ahmed has earned himself a formal invitation to the White House. On Wednesday, President Obama tweeted, “Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”
